This Post Is BPA, Gluten, Fat, and Sugar Free
Let’s get on with it.
I am a member of a couple of Yahoo groups for mommies, where moms can discuss issues they are having with their kids and get answers from those who have been through it. For the most part these groups are a valuable source of information, but there is always that post that is just, well, stupid. Like the one I saw this week, posted by a mom in search of a BPA-free highchair.
A BPA-free highchair? Does she plan on heating the chair to boiling point and then have her child lick it? Because that’s probably the only way her kid could ever absorb any BPA from the plastic, if it even contains any (as most plastics do not). I really wanted to reply back with something, like, “Our wooden highchair is BPA-free. Oh, and I recently got some BPA-free clothes for our son- from Old Navy. You can really find a lot of BPA-free stuff, now!”
I think The Fear has hit a new level. Along with the whole gluten-free-wheat-free-sugar-free-dairy-free-nut-free-thing. Health problems related to these items are often caused by overexposure. So don’t feed your kid bread and cheese all day. And agave? They sell it at Costco, now- don’t even get me started.
I think using safe products and feeding yourself (and your kids) healthy foods should be a priority, but with all these rules, is there room for enjoying what you eat? I’m sure there are some great gluten-free-veganized recipes out there, but all of the vegan desserts I’ve tried were like eating cardboard (no offense to any Vegans out there- I love me some tofu!)
For me, the bottom line is this. Educate yourself, do your best, and try not to buy into everything that’s thrown at you. I am sure that as a child I drank broth boiled in BPA-laden cups, and my parts still work.
