Easy Family Recipes: Sloppy Joes

January 30, 2011

Nope, not from the Hormel can.  As if!  Making sloppy Joe’s on your own is so easy, and the result is de-lish.  My three year-old loved it so much that he asked for a bowl and started eating it with a spoon.  This makes enough for a family of six or leftovers for a smaller group.

1 1/2 lb lean ground beef
1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
2 tbs olive oil
2 cups jarred pasta sauce*
2 tbs tomato paste
2 tbs corn starch or white flour
1 tbs yellow mustard
1 tbs worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
1 pkg hamburger buns
shredded cheese (optional)

Combine pasta sauce through sugar with a whisk and set aside.  In a large pan with lid, heat oil over medium-high heat.  Add onions and meat.  Brown meat while breaking it up into little pieces.  Stir in sauce.  Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a low simmer.  Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.  Serve topped with shredded cheese on hamburger buns.

*use a basic sauce (nothing too chunky or with weird ingredients).
