I Want the Pink Ones

February 11, 2011

The kids at my son’s preschool will be exchanging valentines on Monday.  I asked him if he knew about Valentine’s day, and he replied,

“What’s a valentine?”

“It’s a little card you give to the people you love, like your family and friends.”

“I want one.”

“You’ll get one,  In fact, you’ll get lots of them, because you are going to trade valentines with everybody at school next week.

He didn’t really seem to understand, so I just told him that Valentines Day was sort of like Christmas, only with cards.  It clicked.

We drove up to the mall and went to the Hallmark store, where I discovered all things hokey, all for sale in one place.

After searching for ten minutes for the boxed valentines I so fondly remember from my childhood, I was directed to one of the four valentine isles, where we found giant heart-shaped envelopes that held valentine cards intended for school kids.  They all sort of looked alike, resembling an ad for Nick Jr. more than a depiction of love and friendship.

Hayden went straight for the “girl” ones and said, “I want this one!”

“You don’t want the dinosaurs, or the robots?”

“No, I want the pink one.”

I checked the price, to make sure I could justify buying him a package of the equivalent to modern-day My Little Pony valentines in addition to the two packs of “boy” valentines I needed to get for his school.

He clutched two giant pink hearts.

“No, I want the pink ones.  This one is for me, and this one is for Stella* (name changed to protect the young and innocent).

As much as I tried to explain that the obnoxious packaging wasn’t the actual valentine, that there were 20 little pink valentines inside there, he insisted on one for him and one for Stella.

Ah, sweet, unabashed love.

We ended up going home with two packs of robot valentines, Hayden’s choice.  Even though he doesn’t give a hoot about robots.

Man. I scored Jem and the Rocker valentines once. It was just about the coolest thing ever. I’m seventeen kinds of nostalgic now.

I know- it makes me remember how I used to feel as a kid. Valentine’s Day always made me a little nervous, actually, because I wasn’t sure if I would get a valentine from a boy or someone “popular” or not (neither very likely). Back then, I don’t think things were as PC as they are now, and kids didn’t have to give the same thing to everyone.

I know. When they see each other they run to each other, like those slow motion comedic romance scenes.

Thanks for reading! Today I painted my toenails for the first time in, like 5 years. My son said, “I wish I could paint my nails sometime.”
