Valentine Apple Pie
For those of you who played our little game yesterday, the answer is APPLE PIE. Yes, I know apple pie is not a traditional Valentine’s Day treat, but it could be. If it had hearts. So let’s make apple pie with hearts.
1 recipe double pie crust (No, pre-made crust won’t do. If you need a recipe, click here.)
3 or 4 tart apples (I use Granny Smiths. Winesap are also good.)
3/4 cup sugar
3 tbs flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon (rounded)
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
Preheat your oven to 375º
Make your pie crust. Use a little over half of your dough for the bottom crust. I just press it into my pie plate with my fingers- nobody sees what the bottom looks like, anyway.
Quarter, peel and slice your apples (I like to slice them thin). You should end up with about 6 cups of sliced apples, or enough to fill your pie.
In a large bowl, combine sugar through nutmeg. Add in the apples and toss until well coated. Fill your pie with apple goodness.
Next comes the love.
Take your remaining pie crust dough and roll it out flat (I don’t even use a roller, just smack it down with my hands) until it’s about the same thickness that you would use for making sugar cookies. Using a small cookie cutter, cut out hearts (or the shape of your choice) and arrange them on top of your pie.
Bake for one hour or until the filling is bubbling and the crust is starting to turn golden brown. Let it sit 20 to 30 minutes before serving (with vanilla ice cream, of course).
