It Is Hard To Be Brave, When You’re Only a Very Small Animal.

Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. “Pooh?” he whispered.
“Yes, Piglet?”
“Nothing,” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s hand. “I just wanted to be sure of you.”

Almost twenty years ago I received a birthday card from an old friend with the cutest picture of Pooh and Piglet and this quote.  I don’t think I have the card anymore, but I will never forget it.

Fifteen or so years later Scott and I were living in Auckland, New Zealand, where he was working on a film.  While he was at work I would roam the rainy streets of Auckland and often found myself in the bookstore.  I ended up purchasing and reading eleven novels in four months (there were three things to do in Auckland: run in the rain, drink wine, and read), but the book that I remember the most was a pocket-sized book of the Tales of Winnie the Pooh.

It is hard to be brave, when you’re only a very small animal.”

A couple of years later, I was getting ready for a Valentine’s Day dinner with Scott.  I put on a simple black dress with heels and a sweater.  When I was dressed, I went downstairs to find a little stuffed Piglet perched on the mantle.  A gift that has been passed down to Hayden and still warms my heart when I see it.

“Promise me you’ll never forget me because if I thought you would I’d never leave.”

The simple illustrations and authenticity of Winnie the Pooh stories bring me such delight, and I am thrilled that Hayden has discovered them, too.
