Mars Is Awesome, But Murder Isn’t.
It bugs me when something awesome happens and ruins something terrible. Like this week, when a mission to Mars trumped the shooting of innocent people in a temple, the very place where they should feel most safe.
I picture this Wade Michael Page, and ex-US military man, storming into that temple with America, Fuck Yeah! in his steps. Only this time it wasn’t funny.
Don’t get me wrong- I am thrilled about JPL’s accomplishment in this Mars expedition and wish we would actually make space exploration an even bigger priority, I just think the timing is lame. I fear that while we celebrate our accomplishment we might forget about the families in Wisconsin who are mourning.
In the wake of the recent Colorado shooting, we can’t afford to view these incidents with a what a shame attitude because I believe the horrible actions of these individuals indicate that hatred, intolerance, and an I-am-right-and-you-suck attitude are still present in our country. It saddens me that I am sometimes not proud to be an American.
What happened to the land of the free?

PS. These are often the things I think about while I am out running, which definitely helps me take the focus off of the quarter-sized blister forming under my arm. If religion and politics are too heavy for you this morning, you can read about my latest running injury here.
PPS. BlogHer was good, mostly because I had a great roommate and got to see relatives I hadn’t seen in twelve years. Plus? While I was gone nobody had to go to the emergency room, and upon returning home last night I had the best night’s sleep I’ve had in months.
